[edit] History

At 3:55 p.m. on a rainy afternoon in the fall of 2001, "Eight Ladies & A Beau Tie" (8LBT) prepared for their first official performance at the EMU Amphitheatre at the University of Oregon. The eight ladies, along with a few supportive friends as well as some members of the popular UO men's a cappella group On the Rocks, huddled under the cement structure near the campus "Buzz Café." The ladies bravely kicked off their three-song set with Manhattan Transfer's "Java Jive," into the Cranberries' "No Need to Argue," and finished off with "Catch a Falling Star." The eight ladies were Evynne Smith, Hayley McGee, Anna Joham, Julie Lehnhardt, Monica Karlin, Molly Dames, Liza Webb and Amy Snell (minus a "beau tie").

The group's first official rehearsal was on Wednesday, October 17, 2001, and the group rehearsed twice a week. That fall wasn't much of a success for 8LBT and most of their time was spent looking for a male "beau tie" who was a great beatboxer and fit into the group. However, when the ladies found their beau - he didn't last long. After the New Year, 8LBT took their first road trip down to Berkeley, California, to support On the Rocks at the Quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) held at the University of California, Berkeley. The night of competition, Berkeley's all-female group, the California Golden Overtones, took the stage and blew everyone away. The year before they had won the ICCA International Finals in New York City. What was most inspiring about the Overtones was that they were the only all-female group in the competition and several different women in the group did vocal percussion (beatboxing). Little did the ladies of 8LBT know that night would change the history of women's a cappella at the University of Oregon and make a huge impact on the future of women's a cappella on the West Coast and now throughout the country.

When 8LBT returned home in the winter of 2002, they said goodbye to their "beau tie" and decided to become the U of O's premier women's a cappella group — Divisi. After an uneventful spring term, the following year only three members remained: Evynne, Haley and Julie. That fall, eight new women joined the group — Suzie, Lisa, Anna, Katie, Josi, Sarah, Rachel and Diana — and Divisi set out to become one of the top collegiate women's a cappella groups in the nation.[1]
